Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle and profound way of working with the body. BCST treats the body through the craniosacral system, the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. The craniosacral system has a fluctuating rhythm akin to the ebb and flow of the tide, which practitioners can feel using very light touch at certain places of the body. The skilled hands of a Craniosacral Therapist are trained to sense any imbalances or stagnation, and then work with this rhythm to release restrictions in the body, dissipate tensions and the negative effects of stress. Craniosacral Therapy developed from the work of American Osteopath, Dr. William Sutherland. During a period of extensive practical research he discovered that all parts of our body, including bones, joints and organs have specific intrinsic rhythmic movements.
Who is it for?
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) can help with many different conditions as its treatment helps to restore motion, improve vitality and bring about a higher state of function. For those with acute pain caused by accidental or sports-related injuries, the light touch of a BCST practitioner is often preferable to other hands-on treatments. Long-standing physical and emotional conditions, such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, postural imbalances, sinusitis, asthma and arthritis can also be improved.
BCST offers support in dealing with past and recent traumatic experiences. Many people with conditions as diverse as migraine, headaches, panic attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, back and joint problems, have reported improvement and relief from their symptoms through BCST. It can help with almost any condition as it orients towards increasing the vital forces that enable the body to balance, restore and heal itself. Because it is so gentle and un-invasive, BCST is suitable for everyone from newborns to the elderly. For pregnant mothers BCST is a good way to support their body during this time of extra demand and to keep in good shape for birth. Postnatal parents often come for help with colic, breastfeeding/bonding issues and problems associated with difficult or traumatic births. Letting go of tension and fear held in the body enables both to settle into calmness.
During a session.
During a session you remain fully clothed. You generally lie on a treatment couch or you may be seated. The duration of a treatment is usually 45 min. But this may vary. The therapist will check your medical history and current health. The practitioner makes contact by placing their hands lightly on your body, facilitating your body to relax and make the changes it needs.
The healing process initiated during the treatment, encompasses body, mind and emotions and often continues after the treatment. Because the body functions as a whole, your practitioner may focus on areas other than were your symptoms occur. At times a client may deeply relax and even fall asleep. Depending on the issue, people can feel relief and significant improvement after only one or two sessions. Sometimes three or more sessions are required. BCST complements other therapies, alternative or conventional.
